OUR NEWPORT COMMUNITY IS A PRIORITY FOR US
HAMMETT’S BELL
Bells have long been a symbol of significance in maritime history. They are used to note the arrival of notable guests, mark the daily routine aboard naval vessels, and serve as warning signals in the fog. The Hammetts Bell was manufactured in 1872 by Vanduzen & Tift at its Buckeye Bell Foundry in Cincinnati, and likely hung in a church steeple. Vanduzen was founded in 1837 and produced cannons during the Civil War to support the union war effort.
The company made thousands of bells until it closed in the early 1950’s, and has the distinction of founding the largest bell cast in America. The bell has its original clapper, but is rung only on special occasions. Our neighbors and guests need their beauty sleep!

Kristen Coates is the Art Curator of the permanent collection at Hammetts, with each selected piece capturing the unique spirit of the City-by-the-Sea. You can learn more about Kristen here.
Named for the only female owner of the wharf in history and open to the public, The Sarah Langley Gallery collection is curated by Newport Curates and changes on a seasonal basis. We feature artists from around the world with ties to Newport, who work in dynamic and varied mediums. Watch our social channels for upcoming shows and events in the gallery.

With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a Master of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Sam has cultivated a unique artistic voice that merges vibrant abstraction with a grittier perspective.
