What’s the History of the Kite Festival in Rhode Island?

You’ve likely heard that southern Rhode Island, and Newport specifically, is known worldwide for its sailing history as it is the site of the ‘America’s Cup’ World Class sailing regatta and match race. This is because the city’s geographic layout provides great winds off the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Narragansett Bay. But sailing isn’t the only sport that requires a strong breeze! Brenton Point State Park, the location of the annual kite festival, opened to the public in 1976, offering a beautifully open view of the water. Over the years, The Kite Festival has changed hands from The American Kite Fliers Association to the High Flyers Flight Co and beyond, presenting all phases of kiting to the general public and featuring kite competitions with flyers and kite makers from all over the world. Since 2009, Ron Kitt of Kitt Kites has assumed the responsibility of putting on a show of all phases of kites and kite flyers, successfully keeping this long-standing tradition alive.
